 Many Page Redirects |

We are about to remove a product line (about 600 products) from our store. Customers may still follow links to these product pages, so I would like to redirect all of the former product pages to a single page announcing the change. Is there a better way to set up this many redirects than by entering them on by one from the Page Redirects form in the control panel?

You could do that or you could change your page not found under Pages >> Predefined Pages >> Page Not Found. This is the actual 404 error page so it will show up when anyone goes to a link that doesn't exist on your site. It would save you a little time however and you can change this at any time. |

Also I would recommend using the 404 page as if you do a 301 redirect to another page, you are telling google that the old page has then moved to that page. Now if all of your products moved to that page... they could think of this as duplicate content or they might index the site differently.
If you want to use 301 redirects you want them to go to a single page with a 1 to 1 ratio. If you edit the 404 page you will be better off. Joe |

Using a 404 page does seem to make more sense. Thanks for the tips.
Ideally, I would like to have a custom 404 page for this particular batch of pages and a generic 404 page for all other bad links. Based on a little research, it doesn't look like that will be easy to do though. I wanted to mention it in case anyone has a solution, but otherwise I'm satisfied to make changes to the single 404 page. Thanks again for your help. |

Currently with our software we only have one page for this. What I recommend is you could add in some text such as 'The product or page you were looking for was not found. Here are some recommended products from our site based off of your search' or something like that and you can then place your new product info or links at the bottom there.

I would advise caution with any redirects anyway, tesing each one thoroughly.
I have a couple that have been escalated because they redirect to the wrong url. |
