Our customer base will be solely Canadian for the first year or so, however, I am having difficulties integrating with the system.

For example, I have set up the shipping rates for each province but when I go to test it, it tells me that shipping to that location is not available. How do I fix that error?

Also, the taxes section only includes US States. How can I get it to calculate provincial taxes? It seems to me that this was not a problem with earlier versions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Canadian shipping should work. What type of shipping are you trying to set up (custom, FedEx, etc.)? If you can provide me a link to your v7 site, I can go in and take a look at your shipping for you.

We only handle US Domestic taxes currently.

Thanks for your fast response Mark.

I have set up Custom shipping with individual shipping rates for each province.

How am I then to calculate the taxes based on the customer's shipping location? Can I add it as a handling charge?

The problem with your shipping is that you do not have any max weights set up, they are all still set at 0lb 0oz, you will need to add maximum values to get these to work.

As far as taxes are concerned, adding handling would not be the best way to handle this, as that can only be done as a dollar amount. A better solution would be to add surcharges to your payment methods, as these can be done with percentages.

If we set ours up with usps priority mail international, aren't the correct shipping amounts added in real-time?

Also, hate to be an idiot, but we've never worried about additional taxes. Should we be?

Yes, however, you would still need to supply the maximum weight allowed for the method to be viewed in checkout. Otherwise it will default to 0, for both the min and the max, and no rates will be pulled.

That is really going to depend on where you need to charge taxes. Generally speaking you only need to charge taxes for internet sales in states where you have a physical presence (i.e. where you are incorporated, have your business license, etc.). Since our cart software is currently US centric, and you cannot set a shipping origin outside of the US, this is generally not an issue. In smartmms case, he apparently needs to charge tax for Canada, and needs to workaround for that.

Where would I be able to add surcharges?

Am I mistaken or were earlier versions more compatible with Canadian shipping and taxes? I do not remember running into this problem in the past. Do you think that it will be more compatible in the near future?

To add the surcharges, go into Operations > Payments, and then edit any payment methods that you are using.

In v4, the Tax Manager was wide open, and you could specify taxes for any zip code, so you could create Canadian taxes if you wanted to take the time to input all of the necessary postal codes. You could also have a non-US shipping origin in v4, so from that perspective v4 was friendlier to Canadian stores (and international stores in general).

To this point, v7 has been US centric, and since you could not specify an international shipping origin in v7, there was not any reason to allow for International taxes. We opted with providing the taxes for ease of use, and to reduce the amount of work that needed to be done when setting up taxes in v7. We are planning on adding international shipping origins in the near future, and making changes to the taxes in v7 to accomodate our inernational clients in the near future, however, I do not have an ETA on that.
