Jimmy Buffett said it best when he said, “And it was so simple, like the Jitter-Bug, it plum evaded me.”
Exactly.
Some of the most profound lessons in life are also the simplest constructs… Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Don’t extinguish someone else’s candle to brighten your own. Be careful what you wish for. And on and on. Well, Aesop would have done well to add a fable – a story about the little keyword that could. Could make you money that is…
So you have found the best keyword in the world – the Little Keyword that Could. It has perfect measures of traffic and competition. It has a KEI through the roof. It is at the perfect phase of the buying cycle – this is a word people the world over type into Google®, right at the moment they are ready to buy. And you have this keyword in your arsenal of search marketing weaponry. It is the best little keyword around.
How do you make it work?
The Consistency Principle.
Your little etymological gem can only shine if it is used properly. By constructing a new Web page using the Consistency Principle, you’ll polish it right every time. Here’s what you do…
You’ll need to build your page using your profitable keyword in all of the major on-page elements.
Title Tag – your keyword should be included and near the beginning of the tag. You may be tempted to put your company name first – I have some thoughts on this in an article I wrote about branding by seo.
Description Tag – Your profitable keyword will need to appear again in your description tag. Often overlooked, this tag is super-important. Since it may well show up on the search engine result page, it is your opportunity to compel a searcher to click on your listing.
Meta Keyword Tag – I still hear disagreement in SEO circles about whether or not to use this tag. I say, do it! It can’t hurt you as long as you don’t go crazy on it. Put your profitable keyword in your keyword tag. The venerable Danny Sullivan wrote (again) about using the keyword meta tag a few months ago – it is a worthy read.
Headline (h1 tag) – Your keyword should appear as a headline on your page.
Anyone see a pattern here???
Your body copy – Your keyword should appear in the first sentence of your body copy. Then, just let it, and natural variations of it, appear naturally throughout the rest of the body. Try to include at least 250 words of copy – more is better.
By maintaining consistency with your keyword, by following this consistency principle, you’ll be doing two very important things: First, when the search bot looks at your page, it will have no doubt what the page is about. Second, and perhaps more importantly, your human visitor will also know exactly what the page is about.
The consistency principle will take your profitable keywords and make them shine like diamonds. It’s so simple, but so effective. Use it. Consistently.
