Maybe I am just looking in the completely wrong spot, but my home page in blank and since its the first stop, I obviously want to make a good impression with product highlights and eye-catching text.

Is there a place I am overlooking that helps create a home page, or do I create it from scratch?

The homepage is custom content that you will need to create. You can add this content under Pages >> Predefined Pages >> Home page.

You can also setup products to display on the home page by editing the product and checking the box called - 'Featured on Home Page'.

I don't have anything off the top of my head plus not sure how much you will find, but I can give some items to consider.

For SEO reasons, you definitely want to put some text on the home page describing your site, what you sell, and talk about those products, etc. Then If you want to feature some products as specials, sales, etc definitely add some to the home page as I suggested above.

This will at least give you a basic template for the home page with some valuable content for the search engines.

Some other things you can consider are to first just search for a bunch of ecommerce sites, see what they do for their homepage, see if there is anything that you really like and would like to do for your home page. If there is something you like then try to emulate their functionality.
