I am about to publish redesigns of two NetSol-hosted sites, and need to redirect a few of the old (.htm) pages to new html pages. I know how to do this with htaccess on Linux, or through IIS admin, or with VB script if the pages were ASP, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it for .htm pages on a Windows server with shared hosting (and thus no IIS access).

Can anyone help? I have searched and searched on this site but the only references to 301 redirects tell you why they are great for SEO, but not how to accomplish one here. Other posts in the forum refer to the page redirect feature of the e-commerce package, but I don't have that.

Thanks,

Kelley

There is no way to do this on our Shared Windows Hosting with an HTML page. You can either create an HTML page which duplicates the content on the ASP page or you can do a meta refresh redirect. This is not search-engine friendly like a 301 redirect, but it will get the person to the correct page.

Example of a metareresh redirect:
CODE
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0 ; url=http://www.redirecturl.com/page.html">

In this example:
  • "0" is the number of seconds before the redirect
  • "url" is where to desitnation page (this can be an absolute link as shown here or a relative link like "/page.html"

Wow. I am really surprised that you don't offer this (basic, IMO) functionality. This is very disappointing.

You should also know that before I posted this request I called your tech support to ask this same question. The person I spoke with had clearly never heard of a 301 redirect before, and after I explained to her what it was and she put me on hold to figure out the answer, she told me to create an .htaccess document for my site, do a web search on 301 redirects, and paste the ASP code I found into the .htaccess file - that, she said, would solve the problem. Um, yeah.

At least posting here I got a prompt and knowledgeable response, so I do appreciate that (thanks Craig). But, all in all, a disappointing experience with Network Solutions today.
