I need help with creating a CNAME Mask not domain forwarder. Here is my situation. I am currently hosting a domain with Godaddy.com and have the Name Servers pointing to Network Solutions. I am trying to create a CNAME Mask for a subdomain to point to another server. I am not trying to create a iframed masked url.

The problem I am having is in the Account Manager for Domains, the domain is not listed because GoDaddy.com is the register. Therefore, I cannot create a CNAME record to point the subdomain to another server.

Does anyone have any idea on how to created a CNAME Mask for a subdomain not with Network Solutions? Their are no options for DNS changes with Godaddy.com because Total DNS is pointing to Network Solutions. Is my only solution to transfer the domain?

Unless I am mistaken, you have to create all cnames on the server that is hosting the DNS. If your DNS is hosted by godaddy then the cname has to be on their server. Please note, the registrar does not always host the DNS. As a point in reference, when I as a network admin, were registered our domain with net sol but hosted our own name servers and as such, all changes had to be made to our servers for the cname.

But from the sounds of your post, godaddy does host your DNS so the change would have to be made there.

Within Godaddy.com's domain manager I have the DNS pointing to Network Solutions DNS. The option for Total DNS is blank on Domain Control Manager. I do not have any options to make any changes.

I may not have explained it properly. First, do a whois lookup. In the whois record you will see two servers that start usually with NS1. and NS2. Whoever owns those domain name servers is your DNS host. Those are the servers that host the cname records for your domain. If they are network solution servers, then I would recommend calling network solutions support. If they are godaddy servers, then the change will need to be made by godaddy.

It took 3 people and 2 Support Tickets before someone at Network Solutions understood my problem. If you have a registered domain name with another registery provider (Godaddy.com) and that domain name is pointed to Network Solutions DNS, then you do not have full access to DNS records even if the domain name points to Network Solutions DNS.

You have two options - 1 transfer the domain to Network Solutions and then gain access to add a CNAME record or
2 - configure the DNS through Godaddy's Total DNS and point the IP to your server.
