Which is best to have to help optimize our ecommerce site: 1) a blog on a seperate domain that links back to our ecommerce site's domain OR 2) a blog in a sub-directory on the same domain that hosts our ecommerce site?

We once had a blog on an outside domain and someone told me it was better to have it on our ecommerce site domain so that we wouldn't get penalized for duplicate content.

I've read that blog.yoursite.com was best. Still haven't figured out how to do that in NetSol.

I've read that blog.yoursite.com was best. Still haven't figured out how to do that in Network Solutions®®®.

>Set up a cname record associated with your domain - if you cant figure it out in your control panel, call support and they can do it. Set up "blog.yourdomain.com" A cname is basically an alias associated with your domain.
>On the control panel of your blog CMS - map the domain to the cname record to the "blog.yourdomain.com" that you set up

>>>This will only work with 3rd party hosted blogs. I use TypePad.com and was quick and simple to do. Typepad has very clear documentation on how to get this done using their system. I really like their system. Not sure how to set this up if you are self hosting.

Does it matter that my domain isn't with NS?

I'll look into Typepad, thanks.

I was looking into use WordPress and having it in a subdirectory on my NS ecommerce domain but WordPress doesn't offer mapping to a subdirectory (they do offer mapping to a subdomain).

In researching, I came across this about Network Solutions®. I wonder if their hosted plan will work in a subdirectory on a Pro eCommerce package. I haven't researched or called them yet.
