Hi All,

Our present site, http://www.oldwillknottscales.com, has been online now for over 4 years now (all on Monster/NetSol).

Google still seems to hate us. Aargghh! We're fairly well ranked for individual items, but for the major, generic keywords (like "scales" for instance... the big one), we're still in the 30's at Google.

We hear things from lots of customers, like "the easiest to navigate" and "well laid out", but not any negative comments that would indicate to us WHAT'S WRONG with the site that makes Google poo-poo our site.

We'd sure like to hear from you. Would you please take a look around the site and give us the low-down on what YOU think is wrong, here?

We'd sure appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,
Will Knott

Hi shala,

One word keywords are hard to target and the only way to really rank high for those is to A, have a ton of content on that keyword and use it a good amount and B, you will need to get a lot of other sites that are about scales to link back to you with that keyword as their hyperlink text.

Really though it has been shown that more targeted keywords is the way to go as typically when someone is researching something they will use a wider term like scale. If they are getting ready to purchase something it has been shown that people will search for a narrower term like say postal scale, digital scale, etc.

Because of this I would spend more time focusing on those more specific keywords and in the long run it will be for the best.

Thanks, Joe. We scratch our heads over keywords all the time. We talk about spamming all the time, and, maybe unfortunately, tried to stay away from it. We have some competitors who spam the heck out of their site (I mean super blatantly spam), and they consistently rank way higher than us. So we're considering going in and re-writing our ads using more keywords. Only problem there is that precious commodity called time.

Which brings us to links. Maybe those spam-crazy competitors of ours have more links than we do. We have trouble figuring out how many sites "legitimately" link to our site. When we google "links:oldwillknottscales.com" we see gads of sites linking to us, but the majority of them are there because we spend so much dough on PPC, and those sites that make money with Google Adsense have our site plastered all over them.

Do any of you know how we can filter those "non-legitimate" links out, so we can see how many "legitimate" links we have?

Any of you know anything about "keyword clouds"? Is that an option that might be worth something for an ecommerce site?
