DotNetNuke is unable to be pointed to directly if it is installed to a subfolder because the links that are generated upon installation are hosting root relative.

What this means is that when you point your domain (blog.domain.com) to a subfolder like /blogs the links to images and CSS will display as blog.domain.com/blogs/image.jpg or in other words /htdocs/blogs/blogs/image.jpg which won't find the correct file.

So, if you need to reference a DNN installation directly from a URL without the use of a subfolder, you must install DNN directly to the /htdocs. Otherwise you will just need to reference it by domain.com/blogs, or whichever sub-directory you installed it to.

corey..

ur reply goes well if the DNN has been installed on domain.com/blog..

but is your reply applicable as well if the DNN has been installed on 0xxxxx.netsolhost.com/blog and just have the domain name point to htdocs/blog..

since you say that DNN is on "hosting root relative.." its root is the 0xxxxx.netsolhost.com/blog.., then if i point my subdomain name blog.domain.com to htdocs/blog, it should still pull up the same.. am i right?

it works for my domain name.. i guess.

http://kampeonngpagibig.com/Portals/0/KNP_simple_logo.gif
and
http://02b72e3.netsolhost.com/nuke/Portals...simple_logo.gif

pulls up the same file..

> reading thru what DUANE told me, he says this thread should answer my question..

since the hosting root of the DNN site is on http://02b72e3.netsolhost.com/nuke. if i type in just http://kampeonngpagibig.com.. the URL would change to http://02b72e3.netsolhost.com/nuke/ which SHOULD NOT HAPPEN since there is promise of 25 domain pointers on a network solutions hosting.

the explanation on this is that DNN is designed to be pulled up via the "hosting root relative.." domain. in this case. http://02b72e3.netsolhost.com/nuke/ ... a limitation of the content management system by microsoft that can not be overriden by managing the hosting plan.

is there a way to fix this??.. is there a feature on DNN that would release a CNAME record so that the domain name can become a pseudo-"hosting root relative.." domain. or can even the WEB FORWARDING feature do the trick.??

(DNN limitations are very hard to undestand)

PS.

your advise to place DNN on to /htdocs/ CAN NOT BE DONE AUTOMATICALLY using
web hosting >> manage web hosting >> site enhancements >> content management.

The length of folder is between 3 and 16.

so manual installation should be done??

thanks in advance.

another thing..
http://02b72ec.netsolhost.com/blogtest/
and
http://blogtest.tomatocue.com/

pulls up the same website without the URL changing. (unix-based wordpress blog).

so this discussion is isolated to windows-based default.aspx. that has this "hosting root relative.." feature. that if fixed. can work miracles for several users.

thanks again.

If you need to have the DNN installation in the /htdocs folder a manual installation would need to be done as the auto installer only allows for sub-folder installs.

You may either install DNN to a sub-folder, point your domain to /htdocs, and then reference it as http://domain.com/installfolder/, or you can manually install it to /htdocs and point the domain to the /htdocs folder to accomplish what you are looking to do.
